European pet market continues to grow

Jul 10, 2023
91 mio households in Europe have at least one pet, according to the latest annual report presented by Fediaf, the European pet industry association.

The report indicates that 340 mio dogs, cats, birds, small animals, fish and amphibians were living on the European continent in 2022. This equates to an increase of over ten per cent compared with 2021, with only the number of rodents and rabbits, along with terrariums, experiencing a slight decline.

Sales of pet food exceeded 29 bn euros, increasing in value terms by 5.1 per cent and by 3.5 per cent in volume. This rise has accelerated slightly by comparison with 2021, but inflation is certainly a driving factor here. Sales of accessory products and services came to 24.5 bn euros (+4.5 %).

Figures for individual pet populations in Europe in 2022 are as follows:

127 mio cats (2021: 113.6 mio)
104 mio dogs (2021: 92.95 mio)
53 mio cage birds (2021: 48.7 mio)
29 mio rodents and rabbits (2021: 29.35 mio)
22 mio aquariums (2021: 16.4 mio)
11 mio terrariums (2021: 11.4 mio)
